What Consumers Most Want in 2020: a Debt-Free life.
The article discusses the results of a recent New Year’s survey done by Fidelity Investments. The results show that most people would rather focus on their financial life than their physical life.
Here are the responses to the survey.
Stress
I believe Option A answers were chosen the most because financial issues cause a lot of stress. Studies have shown that financial troubles are a leading cause of stress in American.
Stress is a chemical reaction that prepares your body for a physical reaction because it thinks it’s under attack. This is known as the body’s “fight or flight” response. It happens within the body when we get upset, anxious, worried, sad, angry, scared, excited, confused, feel pressured, feel overwhelmed, or feel threatened.
It causes hormonal, respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous system changes. Physical responses occur inside your body when you’re stressed, regardless of the cause, and they can drastically affect your body and lead to severe health issues even if you’re not aware of it.
Not only is stress the silent killer for everyone, but it also does not discriminate, it is an epidemic in the western world. Over two-thirds of office visits to physicians are for stress-related illnesses.
Now we are stressed about how much money you have (or don’t) and how you’re going to keep a roof over your head, pay off your debt, get to work, prepare for emergencies and feed your family and incurring more debt visiting doctors to cure stress-related illnesses. It is a vicious cycle. Even if you are financially responsible, an unexpected expense could be all it takes to send you into financial duress, especially if you’re not prepared to cope with it.
